Creating so called "designer babys" to help parents treat a sick sibling is legal and should not be banned,Britains highest court ruled today, rejecting an appeal against an earlier ruling..
The country's 5 law-lords unanimously backed a 2003 ruling that gave the go ahead to parents who wanted to extract genetic material from a baby brother or sister to treat a terminally ill sibling..
Thursday's case centered on 6yrold Zain Hashmi ,whose parents wanteda baby with the correct tissue match to help treat his life threatening blood disorder...Zain's parents began treatment to have a baby but have so far been unsuccessful.Proponents say the technology ,which involves harvesting stem cells -or master cells-for transplantation to an ill child ,is ultimately about saving lives. But the procedure of choosing a child based on his/her DNA has raised complex questions and led critics to charge scientists and parents with "playing god"
I believe that having a designer baby in general is a scary thought for those of us who want diversity. The male v. female ratio, and the ratio of different ethnic backgrounds, could change as a result. I believe we should preserve diversity, and especially in societies where females are not as wanted as males, this could be disastrous.
I agree It's frightening and may lead to the creation of a race who will only accept perfection like Nazi Germany
